Summary: Building dictionary to explain building jargon and terminology from A - Z.
Solar collector
Any device intended to collect solar radiation and convert it to energy.
Solar energy
The radiant energy from the sun.
Solar flat plate collector
A solar collector in the shape of a flat plate, consisting either of a series of photovoltaic cells or a sandwich panel made up of a black surface, a film of circulating water or air, and a transparent cover.
Solar gain
Heat that enters a building through windows as solar energy. Considered a "passive" heat source, as opposed to those sources that artificially generate heat.
Solar heat
Heat supplied by radiation from the sun.
Solar heat exchanger
A means of transferring the heat in storage in a solar heating system to the area to be heated.
Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC)
The measure of the solar radiation admitted through a window, including radiation directly transmitted and that absorbed and subsequently released inward.
Solar heating system
An assembly of components, including collectors, heat exchangers, piping, storage system, controls, and supplemental heat source, used to provide heat and/or hot water to a building, with the sun as the main source of energy.
Solar house
A house designed and located so as to use the sun's rays to maximum advantage in heating the house.
Solar orientation
The alignment of a building relative to the sun, initially set either for maximum or minimum heat gain, depending on the local climate.
Solar photovoltaic system
A system that converts solar energy into electrical energy.
Solar storage
Fluid and/or rocks used to hold some of the heat energy collected by a solar heat collector.
Solarium
A room or porch with a great deal of glass and located for maximum exposure to the sun.
Solder
(1) An alloy, usually lead-tin, with a melting point below 427 degrees (C), used to join metals or seal joints. (2) The process of joining metals or sealing joints using solder and heat.
Soldered joint
A gas-tight pipe joint made by applying solder to a heated joint.
Soldering gun
A tool with a pistol grip and a small electrically heated bit that reaches operating temperatures rapidly, used to solder electrical components.
Soldier
(1) A vertical wale used to strengthen or align formwork or excavations. (2) A masonry unit set on end so its long, narrow face is vertical on the face of the wall.
Soldier course
A course of brick units set on end with the long, narrow face vertical on the wall face.
Soldier pile
(1) In an excavation, a vertical member that supports horizontal sheeting and is supported by struts across the excavation and by embedment below the excavation. (2) A vertical member used to support formwork and held in place by struts, bolts, or wires. See also soldier.
Sole
See solepiece (1). (2) See soleplate (2).
Sole proprietorship
A business that is owned and controlled by one person called a proprietor. A proprietorship may or may not have employees.
