Split hanger
A two-piece pipe hanger that is tightened around a pipe.
Split jamb
A two-piece doorjamb that can be adjusted to accommodate varying wall thicknesses.
Split level
A type of house in which the floor levels on one side of the house are one-half story above or below those on the other side.
Split level apartment
An apartment with rooms on two floors connected by a private staircase.
Split pin
A pin or spike that spreads during insertion, or that can be split after insertion.
Split ribbed block
Concrete masonry units featuring a ribbed face with ribs that have been slit off, providing a rough texture.
Split-face block
Concrete masonry units with one or more faces produced by purposeful fracturing of the unit to provide architectural effects in masonry wall construction.
Split-face finish
A rough-faced, building stone cut from stratified rock so that the split face exposes the bedding. Usually the stone is cut so the bedding is set horizontally, but sometimes the cut is made to set the bedding vertically.
Spoil
Dirt or rock excavated and removed from its original location but not used for embankment or fill.
Sponge rubber
Expanded rubber having interconnected cells, used as a resilient padding and as thermal insulation.
Spot-weld
A small circular weld between two metal pieces made by applying heat and pressure.
Spout
A short tube used to direct water from gutters, balconies, etc., so the water will run down the building wall.
Spray bar
A pipe with ports used to apply liquid asphalt to a road surface.
Spray booth
An enclosed or partly enclosed area used for the spray-painting of objects, usually equipped with a waterfall system to catch overspray and/or a filtered air supply and exhaust system.
Spray painting
Applying paint, lacquer, or a similar material with a special tool activated by air pressure.
Spray-in-place insulation
An insulation material applied with a gun or sprayer to surfaces or cavities. Examples include loose cellulose fibre fill and polyurethane foam.
Spray-on insulation
Any of a number of lightweight concretes or mineral fibres and adhesives applied to surfaces and/or structural members for fire resistance, thermal insulation, or acoustic absorption.

Sprayed acoustical plaster
An acoustical plaster applied with a special spray gun. The plaster usually has a rough surface and may be perforated with hand tools before hardening.
Sprayed fireproofing
An insulating material sprayed directly onto structural members with or without wire mesh reinforcing to provide a fire endurance rating.
