Schedule
A chronological itemization, often in chart form, of the sequence of project tasks. See also progress schedule.

Schematic design phase (schematic drawing)
The phase of design services in which the design professional consults with an owner to clarify the project requirements. The design professional prepares schematic design studies with drawings and other documents illustrating the scale and relationship of the project's components to the owner. A statement of estimated construction cost is often submitted at this phase.

Schematic design documents
Documents and drawings that illustrate the relationship and scale of the components of the project.

Scissor lift
An electric or gas-powered platform mounted on a folding arms and used to provide elevated work areas or to raise or lower unit loads.

Sconce
A bracket for a candlelight or a similar electric fixture, placed on a wall.

Score
(1) In concrete work, to modify the top surface of one pour, as by roughening, so as to improve the mechanical bond with the succeeding pour. (2) To tool grooves in a freshly placed concrete surface to reduce cracking from shrinkage. (3) To scratch or otherwise roughen a surface to enhance the bond of plaster, mortar, or stucco which will be applied to it. (4) To groove, notch, or mark a surface for practical or decorative purposes.

Scoria
Vesicular volcanic ejecta of larger size, usually of basic core position and characterized by dark color. The material is relatively heavy and partly glassy, partly crystalline. The vesicles do not generally interconnect. See also aggregate.

Scotia
A deep, concave moulding more than 1/4 round in section, especially as found in classical architecture at the base of a column.

Scour
(1) Erosion of a concrete surface by water movement exposing the aggregate. ( 2) Erosion of a river bottom by water movement.

Scouring
Smoothing freshly applied mortar or plaster by working it in circular motions with a cross-grained wooden float.

Scraper
A flat steel blade used for smoothing wood or removing a finish, such as paint or varnish, from a surface.

Scratch
To score or groove a coat of plaster to provide a better bonding surface for a successive coat

Scratch coat
ln two-coat wet-wall construction, the first rough coat of render or plaster applied as a base coat over lath or masonry.

Scratch tool
Any hand tool for scratching a plaster surface to increase bonding of the successive coat, such as a devil float, drag, or scarifier.

Scratch-brushed finish (satin finish)
A surface finish rendered by mechanical wire brushing or abrasive buffing.

Screed
(1) To strike off concrete lying above the desired plane or shape. (2) A tool for striking off the concrete surface.

Screeding
The operation of forming a surface by the use of screed guides.

Screen
See sieve

Screen door
A lightweight exterior door, with a wood or aluminum frame and small mesh screening in place of panels, which permits ventilation but bars insects.

Screen wall
See perforated wall
