Seal coat
See sealer

Sealant
See joint sealant, membrane curing and encapsulant.

Sealed bearing
A conventional bearing which has been provided with seals on its sides so that the bearing can be used for longer periods without greasing.

Sealed double glass
See insulating glass

Sealed tender
A tender, based on contract documents, that is submitted sealed for opening at a designated time and place.

Sealed tendering
A basic method of procurement that involves the solicitation of tenders and the award of a contract to the responsible tenderer submitting the lowest responsive tender. This type of tendering is commonly used on public works projects.

Sealer
(1) Any liquid applied to the surface of wood, paper, or plaster to prevent it from absorbing moisture, paint, or varnish. (2) A liquid coating applied over bitumen or creosote to restrict it from bleeding through other paints. (3) A final application of asphalt or concrete to protect against moisture. (4) Any liquid coating used to seal the pores of the surface to which it is applied.

Sealing compound
See joint sealant and membrane curing.

Seam
A joint between two sheets of material, such as metal.

Seasoned
(1) Timber that is not green, having a moisture content of 19% or less, and is air- or kiln-dried. (2) Cured or hardened concrete.

Seasoning
(1) The process by which timber is dried, either by air or in a kiln. (2) The curing or hardening process that occurs in concrete.

Seat
(1) The cut made at the lower end of a rafter which enables it to fit securely over the top wall plate. (2) See valve seat.

Second
(1) A piece of secondary quality or one not meeting specified dimensions. (2) A unit measure of time.

Secondary member
A structural member that carries a load to a primary member. Examples include purlins, headers and jambs. See also primary member.

Secret dovetail (mitre dovetail)
A joint whose external appearance implies a simple mitre joint, but having dovetailing concealed within it.

Secret gutter
A concealed gutter.

Secret nailing
See blind nailing.

Section
(1) A drawing of an object or construction member cut through to show the interior makeup. (2) A segment of the project specifications that cover a work item.

Sectional overhead doors
Doors made of horizontally hinged panels that roll into an overhead position on tracks, usually spring-assisted.

Security glass
See bullet-resisting glass and laminated glass.
