Security screen
A heavy screen in a special frame used as a barrier against escapes or break-ins.

Security screw
A screw with a tamper-proof head design.

Security system
A general term for an internal electronic system, such as one employing sensors and alarms that detect unlawful intruders in a home. The system can be local or back to base. A local system simply sounds an alarm, whilst a back to base system, can involve the notification of personel located in a control room, who then have the option of dispatching security personel to the property.

Sediment (silt)
Material that settles to the bottom of a liquid.

Sedimentary rock
Rock such as limestone or sandstone that is formed from deposits of sediment consolidated by cementitious material and/or the weight of overlying layers of sediment.

Seepage
(1) The slow percolation of water through a soil. (2) The quantity of water which has moved slowly through a porous material.

Seepage bed
A trench at least a metre wide into which coarse aggregate and a system of distribution pipes are placed so as to allow the treated sewage which passes through them to seep into the surrounding soil.

Segmental arch
An arch where the curve through the length of the arch is less than a semicircle.

Segmental member
A structural member made up of individual elements prestressed together to act as a monolithic unit under service loads.

Segregation
The differential concentration of the components of mixed concrete, aggregate, or the like, resulting in nonuniform proportions in the mass. See also separation.

Seismic design
Construction designed to withstand earthquake force.

Seismic load (earthquake load)
The assumed lateral load an earthquake might cause to act upon a structural system in any horizontal direction.

Seizing
(1) Friction damage to a metal surface by another metal surface. (2) Restriction or prevention of motion of a metal component caused by fusion or coherence with another component.

Select
A high-quality piece of timber graded for appearance. Select timber is used in interior and exterior trim, and cabinetry.

Select material
Excavated pervious soil suitable for use as a foundation for a granular base course of a road, or for bedding around pipes.

Select merchantable
(1) A grade of boards intended for use where knotty-type timber of fine appearance is required. (2) An export grade of sound wood with tight knots and close grain, suitable for high-quality construction and remanufacture.

Selected tenderer
The tenderer selected by the owner to consider the award of a construction contract.

Selective tendering
A process of competitive tendering for award of the contract for construction whereby the owner selects the constructors who are invited to tender to the exclusion of others, as in the process of open tendering.
