WELCOME TO OUR Stripping paint mechanically PROJECT

Summary: Using Infra Red technology to strip paint safely

Stripping paint is a laborious job. Its also virtually impossible, when stripping paint by hand, to get the quality of finish you can picture in your mind. Some lumps refuse to budge or when pushing in with a scraper, large chunks of window frame come out, putty gets damaged and door and window furniture gets scratched. In short stripping paint is not fun !

The Swedes have been working on this problem and now, thanks to high reccomendations from the National Heritage Boards in Sweden, Finland and Norway we have the Speedheater System which works by producing harmless infrared rays which react with the water in the chemicals making up the paint. The water is drawn to the surface where it quickly evaporates. The safe heat produced by the Speedheater also penetrates deep into the wood destroying mould and fungal growth. The Speedheater can bu used indoors and out and it a really effective way of preparing surfaces for a new look.

To see a video of the speedheater in action, click here. To view the Speedheater in much more detail click here.

Heating paintThe top layer of paint is usuallly held responsible for peeling when, in reality it is the first layer which no longer has sufficiant adhesion. By stripping back the paint to the bare wood one can start again and get a job to be proud of. The speedheater method softens the paint quickly and efficiantly, making it very easy to scrape off and very kind to both the environment and the wood.

After softening, its easy to scrape the paint away as can be seen with the images, left.

The heat gets deep into the wood and draws out the moisture.

Scraping Paint

Moisture is drawn out and natural resins and rosins melt and are bought to the timber surface. This inhibits the ability of the wood to draw in more moisture which, in turn, assures good adhesion for paint and extends the life of the paint layers.

The temperatures reached by the speedheater are at least half of those produced by a hot air gun but because of the concentration and the infrared are much more effective and less dangerous.

Hands Free Operation Hands Free

Accessories are available for Speedheater which enable hands free operation. One area can be heated while the last area is scraped. This saves time allowing greater areas to be covered in one go.

WindowsSpeedheater can be used when restoring windows with (if the instructions are followed!) little risk of cracking . The Speedheater system offers professional scrapers which can be bought by clicking here

It is quite common when removing paint that one side of the house is considerably more difficult. This is usually because the paint dries out over time and the layers of paint have become too dry.
A house on the coast and/or exposed to strong sunlight (e.g. the south side) may also need particular consideration and preparation beforehand in order to ensure effective paint removal. Sun, wind and heat all tend to make the old coats of paint hard and dry, which complicates the process. The same is true of interior wood details such as furniture, ceilings, mouldings, frames, doors, stairs, etc. that have been indoors and therefore exposed to heating for a long time. After first trying out as shown in the instruction manual, if the paint is particularly hard to remove in places it is a good idea - either 24 hours before or at least overnight - to apply a mixture of 80% boiled linseed oil and 20% balsamic turpentine or low-aromatic white spirit . This mixture will re-moisturise the paint, making the job easier and saving time. It can be applied using either a brush or a spray bottle, and will speed up and simplify the job dramatically. It bears repeating that you should start off by trying out as described to avoid any unnecessary steps and additives.

Click through to the Speedheater system and see how you can make that awful job a whole lot easier.
