The Sharp Edge Chisel Sharpener from G Sharp Tools is the simple and trouble-free way to sharpen chisels and plane blades from 3mm to 85mm wide. Developed in the UK and manufactured from engineered injection moulded ABS & Acetyl plastic, it is light, robust and easily transported. The sharpener is quick to set up, and features a unique sharpening angle that can be varied from 23 to 90 degrees.

The Sharp Edge is very easy to use – whether you are right- or left-handed. Once set up, you can, if required, achieve the exact same angle every time and it will also be square across the width of the blade, ensuring that your work is as accurate as possible. Should you choose to change the angle, this is easy and very quick to do.

Replaceable diamond hones and an extra fine finishing diamond cloth can give a polished edge and, if needed, the Sharp Edge can also deliver a secondary micro bevel for the ultimate sharp edge.

Most important of all, the Sharp Edge is incredibly safe as the blade remains static while being sharpened.

Sharpening Instructions for the Sharp Edge Chisel Sharpener:

  1. For sharpening a 3 or 6 mm chisel, simply place the blade spacer in one of the slots closest to the centre of the tool rest. The next slot is for 9-15 mm and the outside slot for chisels up to 38 mm. For blades the are wider, i.e plane blades, remove the blade spacer. The blade will then be held against the shoulder or the base unit.

  2. Select the desired grade of diamond hone & place it in the hone holder (where it is held magnetically). You can work through all the grades, coarse to very fine.

  3. Chose the angle required on the edge of the blade and by loosening the handle, sliding the hone support to the required position and re-tighten the handle (only finger tight). The common angles are marked on the sliding hone support and align with the datum line. You can also match the hone holder to the angle that suits your tools from 23 degrees. Then secure the angle by re-tightening the handle.

  4. Place the chisel against the blade support and you should notice the chisel is virtually in the centre of the tool. With a slight lift of the handle you will feel the top sliding unit raise about 0.5 mm. At this point, gently slide the chisel along the edge of the blade spacer and up to touch the diamond hone (do not force it against the diamond hone).

  5. Hold the chisel in place against the blade spacer and gently move the top carriage across the face of the chisel.

  6. Take the chisel out and check if a burr has been produced on the back of the chisel. Use the backing off tool to flatten the back of the chisel (use the finest diamond hone 1500 grit). Repeat steps 4 and 5 reducing the number of times you slide across the face of the chisel i.e 6 times then five etc until you are happy with the edge and each time use the backing off tool to flatten the back.

  7. If your chisel has a polished back, use the diamond foils (6 and 3 micron) in the backing off tool to bring back the polish.

  8. Finally, you can finish off by ‘stropping’ the chisel on a piece of leather or a piece of card.

Please note that depending on the condition of the chisel or plane blade, you may need to use the coarser diamond hones in the backing off tool to flatten the back of the blade.

All the diamond hones and foils can be cleaned with the use of an ordinary pencil eraser.
N.B only use WD 40 spray to lubricate if needed. DO NOT USE silicon or PTFE spray lubricants.

The DIY Doctor store is open and available for delivery orders.

Our range of products is reduced to focus on products that are essential, or safe to pick and dispatch.

Bank Holidays

We do experience an increase in orders over Bank holidays which can lead to delays in processing orders. We will endeavour to dispatch all orders as quickly as possible. If there are any potential delays we will contact you directly to inform you.

Free Delivery:

Where products have been quoted as having free delivery or delivery included, this will not apply for Northern Ireland and the Highlands and Islands due to the excess delivery charges incurred reaching these locations. Delivery costs can be seen by entering your postcode into the basket.

Why do we charge delivery?

A great many of our customers purchase multiple products, so if we build the delivery charges into each item we will in effect be charging delivery on every product in their basket. We think it is fairer to charge a single delivery cost for the contents of the whole basket once. Some products do have delivery included; this is typically because they are dispatched from another location, generally direct from the manufacturer, as there are restrictions to how they can be delivered due to their size, or if they are liquids, for example.
