DIY Doctor Takes Part in UK’s First Sharing Festival

Posted on November 8, 2015 by DIY Doctor

Frome in Somerset has launched what is thought to be the first Sharing Festival in the UK. DIY Doctor is featuring in the DIY advice workshops at  SHARE: A Library of Things on the Bridge in Frome, running drop in sessions along with Men’s Shed on Wednesdays throughout November.

The Festival of Sharing started during the Frome Independent Market on  Sunday 1st November and DIY Doctor was in his ‘surgery’ giving free DIY advice and tips.

There are pop up events and weekly activities at the shop including: DIY Wednesdays (featuring DIY Doctor and Men’s Sheds) answering DIY questions and queries, Tool and Knife Sharpening; Create Thursday which includes Make do and Mend clothes fixing workshop, Weaving Workshop, and a Clothes Swap, and Repair Café every Saturday. The shop will also be sharing challenges such as ‘SHARE a smile with a stranger’ and ‘SHARE a cake with a friend’.

Mike Edwards from DIY Doctor says “Taking part in the festival of sharing is a way that DIY Doctor can give something back to the community where we have our offices, and it’s great to meet the other individuals and businesses involved in SHARE”.

DIY Doctor are hoping to offer local DIY courses shortly and we would love to hear from you if you would like to take part.  Please contact us to let us know what courses you would be interested in so we can gauge the level of interest.

Other events in the town include Edventure’s ‘Surplus Supper Club’, a discussion on alternatives to money and a workshop for other towns looking to start up their own ‘Library of Things’.

Project manager Maija Powell said, “We are really excited about hosting this festival of sharing. It’s the perfect opportunity to brush up your skills, get creative and share ideas. It’s also a great chance to come to the shop and see what we have to offer. The great thing about sharing is it makes you feel good too.”

Other organisations and community groups will also be putting on events through the month.

Full programmes are available from SHARE and about town. See www.sharefrome.org or pop into the shop for more info. The video below gives more information on the idea behind SHARE.
