A crazy idea hatched at the DIY Doctor Christmas party last year has become reality. Gervase Evans, our Master Joiner, announced that he was going to build a bike from bamboo and then ride if from Lands End to John O’Groats. Offering moral support, Charles Dowson, offered to join him if he actually went through with it.
And so started a period of furious bike building, and disbelief before it dawned on Charles that Gervase was actually serious. Training then begun in earnest as the team prepared for the challenge which is due to be completed later this month.
Sadly at this point Gervase has had to post pone his attempt for this year as he has been diagnosed with Bowel Cancer. Thankfully he caught it early and has responded very well to his treatment, so is already booked to attempt the LEGOG (as it is known) next year.
With so much training, and already a significant amount of sponsorship for our chosen cause, the homeless charity Crisis UK, Charles is riding on.
Crisis is the UK national charity for single homeless people who we have been supporting for a few years now. The charity offers year-round education, employment, housing and well-being services from centres in London, Newcastle, Oxford, Edinburgh and Merseyside, called Crisis Skylight Centres.
As well as year-round services Crisis runs Crisis at Christmas, which since 1972 has been offering food, warmth, companionship and vital services to homeless people over the Christmas period. In 2016 almost 4,600 homeless people visited Crisis at Christmas, which was run by about 10,500 volunteers.
