2 port and 3 Port Mid Position Valve

can someone please explain the difference and the purpose of the two above valves. please use layman terms as not a plumber. thanks for your time.

your 3 port valve switches between hot water only, central heating only and both at the same time according to where heat is needed - motorised valves do this automatically.

2 port valves offer only two options.

thanks nitro 23456. are you a qualified plumber? if so is it ok to ask other questiond to you direct? i`am studying to be a plumber on one of those home courses and it would be nice to speak to someone who answers in plain english!
