A problem painting wood white

I am trying to paint some wooden shelves white, but the paint is just being absorbed into the wood. I have so far put on 3 coats of gloss, but the paint just soaks in. I am new to this DIY game, can anyone help please? :?

Hi diygirl,
Did you use a primer then an undercoat first and lastly gloss?
If not, thats how I would proceed.
