Adding a light to a ceiling fan

by craigart42 » Wed Oct 22, 2008 2:04 pm

I am trying to add a light to a ceiling fan. The fan has two 'spare' wires - black and red - available for such a project, however the light I am trying to add to it has a black and a white wire, as well as the earth of course.
Do I connect the black to black and the red to white? Or do I throw everything away and buy a new light/fan combination?
Thanks

Black and White rings alarm bells and one would be checking the whole fitting as those colours normally are only used in the USA which in the main uses 110 volt not 230 volt as we do here.
You may be able to use it but it needs checking by someone in the trade to ensure it is OK.

Thanks for the response, I guess you confirmed my thoughts - it was bought at B&Q so probably ok, however I am not taking chances so will go for a replace.
thanks again
