Advice Needed on how to Buildup Decking Base

by Grayy » Thu May 17, 2018 11:22 pm

Hi I'm looking to lay my first deck which will be around 4M2. I'm just a bit unsure of how to build the base up.
I have a large flowerbed with a solid brick surround which is probably 15-19" high which I intend to use as part of the support. Also I do want the decking to be higher as I think it will give a better view of the garden.
I am thinking 4by4 posts in post mix and I think I read 6by2 joists are pretty common.

My main questions for now are:
1- if these posts/joists would be adequate
2- How deep the posts should be set considering the height of the decking
3- How far apart should posts be on a deck of this size?
4- How to attach the joists to posts? do they simply go on top of the posts or can you cut a 2" block out of the top of the posts to bolt the joists and sit them on the posts? (without affecting the treatment of them)

I'm sure If I can get the base right the rest will be straight forward,
Thanks for your help and advice.
