Bad smell coming from shower drain

Post by Gster » Sat Jan 24, 2009 3:09 pm

I have a terrible smell in the upstairs bathroom, I have tried various solutions including bleach which removes the smell for about a week but then it comes back. it is coming from the shower drain.

Gster,
The most likely cause is that the water in the trap under the shower is being sucked out - assuming you have a trap. If you can look into the trap see if there is sufficient water in it to provide a seal. If not you will need to fit an air admittance valve in the pipe from the shower.

See our projects oin gurgling sinks ans basins and the one on Air admittance valves. If a vacuum is beinbg formed the water will go from the shower trap. www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects.htm

smelly shower drain

Post by daltriani » Mon Mar 02, 2009 4:23 pm

hi, like many others on here, i have one shower which is making the most horrible sewage smell. i held a lighter near the plug and found that the smell comes with enough force to blow out the flame. the shower is on the second floor, any ideas what the problem could be?

daltriani,
This will not happen on a continuous basis if there is a trap fitted to the shower. You need to check for the presence of a trap.
