Black & Red wires in switch box

by tomsto » Fri Apr 17, 2009 10:19 am

Hi, I have removed an old brass faced 2 gang 2 way switch, and intend replacing it with a chrome faced one. In the box there are 2 Red and 2 Black
wires, plus an Earth wire. The new switch is different than the old one. on the top there is COM. L2. L1. and on the bottom there is L2.LI. and COM. plus the
Earth connector. any help would be much appreciated. thanks, tomsto

Connect earth cores to the earth terminal, and one red core to each COM terminal. Connect the black core of each black\red pair to the L1 terminal at the opposite side of the switch, i.e. the L1 furthest away from the COM terminal it's red core partner is connected to. Disregard L2's.. they are used in two way circuits, i.e. a landing light which can be operated from more than one location.
