Bleach on wooden kitchen worktop

by vezco » Wed Jan 23, 2008 11:04 pm

I recently spilled bleach on my newish wooden kitchen worktop. It is hardwood Iroko. It has been oiled with the product that came with it which simply says 'Prime worktop oil'.

I know enough to realise how bad this is and unfixable. But I'm looking to patch it up as best I can. Anything would be an improvement.

Can't really replace a section as it's very near the sink and the worktop cost the earth.

I have learnt my lesson and would never buy a wooden worksurface again!

Can you not sand it back and re-oil?

Yes indeed! I did and that worked.
So many people told me that I'd ruined it for life and there was nothing I could do that would really work (both online and in person) that I'd panicked and believed them - what nonsense.
After I posted that I did exactly as you say, sanded it and re-oiled. And whilst it's not 100% as good as new, you'd really have to know where to look to see a difference.
thanks for replying
