Cement Mounds in Victorian Fireplace

Hi
There are 2 cement mounds inside my old victorian fireplace that are visible now I have removed the front of the fire. Could somebody please advise what purpose these serve and if it matters if they are chiseled out? I intend to put a stove in there.
