Central heating only works for an hour

by Payusjh » Sun Dec 19, 2010 9:03 pm

We are having lots of trouble with our central heating/hot water at the moment and wondered if anyone has any ideas.....

Basically the central heating comes on for around an hour before the radiators cool down and go cold, they then do not heat back up at all unless you leave the boiler off for 20mins or so and then restart it. It does this whatever the thermostat in the hall or on the boiler is set at. And even if left on constant and the room is freezing.

Over the last few months we have had a new heat exchanger, new PCB panel and new internal thermostat. None solved the problem, except that that when new thermostat installed it worked for a day (but only if hall thermostat was set at 15c). It then stayed on all the time. We then went on holiday and switched system off. When we got back it no longer worked.

It is a sealed heating system (potterton). After 45 mins if you go to the boiler the pump is still making a noise but no flame in the boiler. It seems as if it is still sparking every second or so but not lighting. It has also been tripping when due to come on timer and have to rest whole system - this is intermittent tho and could be due to the cold weather?

Yesterday we had a radiator pipe leak identified but this has been fixed and it has made no difference.

What type of boiler and what type of sealed system do you have?
