central heating tank overflows

by gthackeray » Wed Feb 20, 2008 10:08 pm

Hi all,
For a while I have noticed water outside my mother's property, where 3 overflow pipes are. However, never see it happen during the day, always at night when not being used.

Found out it is the tank that feeds the rads, and the water was very warm. The valves don't drip, its 100% caused by the expansion pipe.
Why would this happen at night? I understand why the cold tank would drip more at night needing a washer, but why would the expansion only happen at night. my mother keeps the heat on all night, at 3 on scale of 1 to 8

I suspect it is a boiler overheating problem, caused by what?

The boiler is a wall mounted potterton prima f.

many thanks, in anticipation,
