Chimney alcove shelf to hold heavy aquarium (100KG)

by Gaz2007 » Thu Jul 26, 2007 8:57 pm

Hi,

I want to put a shelf into my chimney alcove and I want to put an aquarium on it. As the aquarium full or water will weigh about 100KG the shelf obviously needs to be very strong.

I was thinking of using 25mm x 25mm x 3.5mm steel angle to support th full length of back and sides, then using 25mm thick marine plywood for the shelf (or two sheets of 12mm glued together), supported along the front with more steel angle, screwed into the wood from the side and below.

All three sides are brick, so I was going to use M8 x 60mm projecting rawlbolts to attach the steel angle to the walls.

The approximate dimensions of the shelf are 1400mm x 340mm

Any thoughts on whether the above would be strong enough, or any better ideas? All comments much appreciated!

Many thanks!!
