Crumbling Wall behind Radiator in Victorian Property

Postby Beatrice1711 » Thu Aug 17, 2023 11:28 pm

Hi all,
I’m in the process of redorating my lounge in my Victorian conversion. I took off the radiators and found for one of them, cracks and for the other, cracks as well as the wall crumbling. Pictures of said walls attached. How should I go about rectifying this DIY?
Thanks!

Hi beatrice1711,
Sorry but your only option is to remove the radiator brackets, hack off loose plaster and replaster.

Hi beatrice1711,
On second thoughts leave the brackets in place, use a light hammer and tap the plaster starting at the cracks, if it sounds hollow tap harder and break away plaster. Once you reach a firm edge you can then treat the wall with waterproof PVA, let this dry and apply plaster to make good. You might get away with single coat plaster - apply to leave slightly lower than the surrounding area. Let this dry and finish with another coat.
