dimmer switch makes my lights buzz

by grangesu » Sat Jul 24, 2010 7:06 pm

i have had an mk dimmer double switch installed and it makes my light buzz loudly, the buzz comes from the lights not the switch, the main light does not buzz anywhere near as loud as the wall lights ( the main light has 10 x g4 20w halogens , and the wall lights which are really loud have 4 x g4 20w halogens). i do not know wattage of The dimmer switch and realise that it probably needs replacing, but what do i replace it with to get rid of the problem, i should add that it is brushed chrome and a flat plate , however a replacement would only need to be brushed crome.

Hi not heard lights buzzing but switches certainly do, rating of dimmer needs to be next size above max wattage of lamps so 200 for centre light plus 80 for each wall light.
You dont say how many but one would be too much for a 250w dimmer (Smallest in normal use).(200+80=280)

Centre light plus 3 X 80 would overload a 400w dimmer (next size up).
(200+240w=440)

So either smaller wattage lamps (bulbs) or larger dimmer
next size up being 600w I believe,

Had this a few times when customers have purchased there own LV fittings from some of the well known sheds.
Some built in trany,s are just not dim-able or require a certain type of dimmer to be compatible.
Some lv transformers require inductive dimmers, but this is not so common these days.
