Do I need to earth a metal pendant lampshade?

by samd » Fri Aug 14, 2009 8:05 pm

Hi - apologies if this is a silly question - I've looked in the project pages and on other threads.

I've replaced a ceiling rose (successfully I think - it works anyway) with a metal finish rose with a clip-on hook Google "wickes.co.uk/6-A-Plug-in-Ceiling-Rose/invt/156368"

I want to hang a metal lampshade from it - currently I have two core unearthed flex and a plastic lampholder. Is that ok (the ceiling rose is earthed) or do I also need 2 core + earth flex and a metal lampholder with an earth?

Any help greatly appreciated!

Sam

Hi - thanks for the reply. Just to check - the shade won't be hanging from the lampholder itself - it's hanging off the hook on the ceiling rose on a metal chain. Is that still ok?

looking at the piccie I would say it almost certainly should be earthed. check the instructions, they should tell you.

yes it's fine - the metal shade will be hanging from a metal chain attached to the metal hook of the ceiling rose, which you say is earthed (certainly should be). so the shade will be earthed. the lampholder needs no earth as it's plastic and double insulated.
