Establish gravel driveway full of weeds and plants! Help.

Postby tallguy1967 » Tue Jun 22, 2010 8:31 pm

Dear Forum,

I am a Newbie here and wanted some advice. I have a 14 year old gravel driveway that generally has worked well. It appears to have a solid base, but the gravel is sparse in some areas. Before I order a massive load of gravel I wanted to ask about how to supress weeds/grass and the odd plants from the edges and gully between the tire tracks.

I have previously dug up and scrapped away the weeds, thus exposing earth but as you can imagine 3-5 months later they grow back. I have tried weed killer, but nothing seems to work.

Should I dig out the drive and relay it with some sort of membrane? What are my options. I don't want to cover it up only for the plants to grow through again. Also whats the order Earth/Scalpings/Sand/Membrane/Single? I don't know?

The dive does get a lot of traffic and turning cars.

Any skilled advice out there much appreciated.
