Extending roof trusses.

Post by foz1234 » Wed Jun 22, 2011 11:40 pm

Hello everyone,

I am thinking about enclosing unfinished attic space to make a heated/cooled storage area. The problem I have is the roof trusses are 2x6s. So insulation will either be R19 or I have to make some modifications.

I was thinking about butting 2x4s next to the 2x6s to give a insulation space of 9 inches and using R30C insulation. To secure the 2x4s to the 2x6s, I could either use straps (10 per truss/5 each side) or 3/8 inch plywood nailed and glued on each truss side.

Does anyone see any problems with doing this? Either using straps or plywood?

Thanks for your help!

BTW, I am in NC and we rarely get snow, but there is a possibility of getting a foot of snow on rare occasions ...... with the global warming and all. :)
