fireplace

I am in process of fitting new fire surround and gas fire, the stone back panel that fits to chimney breast along with surround has opening pre-cut
for the new fire, the actual opening in chimney breast is however larger than the opening in the stone back panel. Should I brick up the opening in the breast to same size as opening in stone back panel or is it O.K. to fit new panel and seal as is.??
