Some of our internal doors have a spring loaded catch so the door knobs are only used to pull the doors shut/open. They are secured by 3 very small screws which pull out of the thin door panel.
Plasplugs make hollow door fixing for 6mm screws - is there anything similar available for smaller screws? If not is there any other way to attach the knobs more securely?
Hi, Its very unusual for a hollow door not to have a lock block which is a square piece of timber put especialy in the door for fitting a lock or latch to. This is just a usefull for a handle or knob if you can locate it.
If the door has been hung the wrong way round, or there is no lock block you can try inserting the screws with little bit of this adhesive around the thread. It sticks absolutely everything !
Take a look at the video as well. To be absolutely sure, you can put a dab of Stixall on the back of the knob itself.
This is the best solution without causing danage to the door as hollow fixings of all kind need much larger holes than the screw threads. This can make fixing impossible if they do not work properly.
Good luck and please do let us know how you get on as this could help others too.
Couldn't find the lock block but moved the knob as near to the edge as possible so it just clears the frame as the door closes and got 2 of the 3 screws to get a proper grip.
Have to be careful not to skin knuckles when pulling the door closed !
