Foundation problems

Any suggestions/solutions for dealing with a watercourse which is in the path of foundaions in a selfbuild

well water course could mean anything from water running down a path to a river.

clearly you would need to divert the water flow away from/around the building then investigate the sub soil to confirm what type of foundations would be the most suitable, any idea what the ground conditions are; clay, sand, gravel, rock, silt, fill? etc and to what depths? and what is the gerneral construction of the proposed self build?
