I have recently moved into a house and the front door and surround was very weathered. It looked like it was covered in wood stain so I sanded down and applied new woodstain only to realise that what I thought was stain was probably weathered varnish and now I have a stained door with remnants of what I think is stained varnish patches which is a mess. I know, I'm an idiot. Anyway, how best to resolve? Should I lightly sand, prime and paint over it all? I used ronseal 10year woodstain. Should I be looking at any specific types of prime and paint to go over a woodstain/patchy varnish? Any advice would be great. Thank you.
