Heavy duty gate post

Post by mrzzz » Mon Jul 08, 2013 9:53 pm

Whats the best cement mix to hold railway sleepers in the ground as driveway gate post? the gates are 6ft tall and 140cm wide each and heavy. also what size spreader bar would i need at the top to stop the post moving inwards? i have seen people use cement to stop the falling in on themselves this of course is just under ground but as i have a railway sleeper drive couldn't i use the sleeper as a spreader bar at the bottom and say 10cm x 10cm fence post at the top?

you can buy postcrete or a mix of 6 parts sharp sand and gravel to 1 part cement, to stop them falling forward bury them in the ground 600mm
