laying engineered wood over carpet underlay

by rattanauk » Tue Mar 20, 2007 10:33 am

Hello, I'm planning to lay an engineered wood floor in my bedroom and have a perfectly sound underlay under the existing carpet. Is it ok to lay the new wood floor over the carpet underlay thus avoiding the additional expense of the various types of underlay specifically recommended for the job in the DIY shops?.

Thanks

Rattana

Could be a little too springy which may stretch the joints when walked on. Laminate underlay compresses very well whereas carpet underlay stays in its cushion state.

With a carpet underlay being much springier, your glue may fail in the T&G.
