Light fitting completely unmarked (voltage, which is live/neutral, current etc.) - is it safe to fit?

Postby enrico94 » Wed Nov 24, 2021 7:37 pm

I bought an LED bathroom light from a well-known online retailer. It arrived in a plain cardboard box (with a CE sticker on the box), no instructions and no markings at all on the fitting itself - just 2 wires sticking out of the top.

My question is: is it safe to use? Are there legal requirements about having the voltage and other info marked on a luminaire, or is it OK to just have that info in the seller's online product description (which said it was 240v AC, 18 watts).

I was just a bit surprised - and read other posts on here about house insurance being invalidated if products don't meet the statutory regs.

Humorously, I wondered if it was the cardboard box that met the CE mark requirements, not the light fitting!

Many thanks.

Simply Build It

Not sure what has changed since leaving EU, but lumen, watts, must be marked.

Having said this, I have bought bulbs without the marking which have worked better than those marked correctly.

Thanks. It's not the bulb, per se, but the entire fitting (which you would attach to the ceiling or wall) that's unmarked. The whole thing is sealed, so you can't get inside to look at the LEDs.

Hopefully a picture attached.

As said likely no problem, but it does not conform if unmarked, so only you can decide either send it back or keep it, your within your rights to send it back.
