We own a Semi detatched house that is also link detatched with 2 garages on the other side
(Neighbour1 house>our house>our garage >neighbour2 garage>neighbour2 house)
Because of this layout we have no side access to our property-its always been this way as its how the houses were built.
We currently use the route through our garage as access to our garden. We have converted half our garage to a utility room so we also have to walk through that to access the garden-not ideal but its what we are used to.
We are planning more building work and trying to weigh up the best way forward-taking into account our need for garden access (we have 2 big working dogs so losing garden access from the front of the house is not an option)
As i see it our best bet is to approach our very lovely neighbour2 and see her thoughts on separating our 2 garages. Obviously leaving hers at its current full size and reducing the width of ours to give us a side gate to our garden. (We have absolutely no idea of cost implications so unsure if this is even an option-anyone whose done this in the past, is it worth the money?!)
This would then give us the option in the future to build over our garage.
Are we mad to be considering this as in my head it seems a massive amount of building work. We want to extend behind our current utility room (its within rhe attached garage) so creating side access seems to be the first step.
