Mahogany window frames

by laurafraser » Mon Jun 23, 2008 6:56 pm

My bungalow has solid mahogany windows which were professionally painted 15 years ago and are now in need of attention s I am retired I thought I would do it myself. I have been told that I need a varnish which will let the mahogany breathe - any suggestions please. Do I need to strip the windows down to wood - advice much appreciated.

if the windows are currently painted and you want to varnish then yes you will have to strip them back to bare wood. if they were previously stained then it may not be necessary to strip, just wipe clean with warm soapy water.

depends what product is already on there.

with regard to varnish there are numerous products out there. sadolin, ronseal and cuprinol all produce some very good exterior wood preserves, check on the tin for suitability with mahogany.
