Modifying brick archway in living room before rendering

Postby Richtkd » Thu Nov 05, 2020 5:40 pm

Hi to all the experts out there!

New to this and very much novice when it comes to brickwork so apologise in advance for probably 101 questions!

We're having a brick archway rendered but want to modify before rendering.

But could our 'mods' compromise the structure somehow? I'm quite the worrier!

Mod 1: The archway has (had) a kind of ornamental stand on either side, 5 bricks high.

Have removed this on the left and intend to do the same on the right (circled right)

Any risk they might be there to transfer load by increasing the footprint?

Mod 2: would like to remove the half brick circled left to make way for a single socket, but that only leaves one full brick in the column.

Wondering if that might cause a problem?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Hi richtkd
Neither of your proposed removals should make any difference- just don’t remove more than 1/2 brick.
