New Light Fitting Problems

Post by MERYL » Mon Apr 21, 2008 6:47 pm

Hi, I am trying to fit a new ceiling light in the bathroom and to begin with when I switched it on it was ok, but when I switched it off it tripped the electrics off. Then I checked different things now I can't switch it off, what am I doing wrong??

You have most likely connected the Line directly to the lamp and the Switch to neutral which will produce a direct short when the light is switched on.
The Line wires either red or brown connect the Line in to next lamp and the switch but not to the lamp. The switch return wire is often black or blue and should have a brown or red sleeve on it and goes to the light and not with the other black or blue wires which are neutrals. Try looking at Projects for more information on how lights are wired.
