Hi,
Yes it can be done,but be sure to use a stabiliser solution then a sealer before painting ,if painting a fire surround you might want to use a paint with a high acrylic content as they are heat treated before being packed,good makes are ,zoffany,colortrend and dulux new range called simply dulux they are all 100% acrylic.
