Painting Old Plastered Stained Ceiling

Post by pacman67 » Wed Jun 06, 2007 7:57 pm

We have just stripped all the paper off our kitchen ceiling and then painted it. We have put on 2 coats of white emulsion but it looks hardly painted, it is still very yellow in places, especially around the edges. The house is 1890's and i am not sure if its the original plaster. We just stripped then painted?

any thoughts on why it is still so discoloured, have we made a mistake somewhere along the line. should we just keep on emulsioning it ? or is there something else we should do??

thanks for any help

At some point in its life the ceiling has probably got stained by water even if that water only came from condensation. It will not matter how many coats of emulsion you put on it the stain will still come through. See our project on blocking water stains and you will find a stain blocker in there which will stop them coming. Make sure you have removed all traces of natural grease etc from teh ceiling by wiping over with sugar soap wipes
