Pipe inside shower drain blocked? All aspects of plumbing questions and answers, help, tips and information

I've probably very ignorant but I'm trying to clean the slow draining shower drain in my teen daughter's en-suite and when I took the chrome cover off I was surprised to see what looks like a pipe inside the drain, taking up most of the space. What kind of drain is this and how do I clean it?

Looks like the bit in the middle is a removable trap - try pulling it out or perhaps twisting it.
