Please help : leak but don't know where from!!

by sarawat » Wed Jun 10, 2009 3:29 pm

We noticed a large (about 30 cm long) damp patch appear on the ceiling of a room directly under our ensuite bathroom (three storey house) about 3-4 months ago. At first we though the leak causing the damp patch was coming from the shower cubical so we stopped using it to see if that made any difference. Then a few days later we noticed another damp patch further along the ceiling so stopped using the sink too to see if that helped. Since them we have been using another bathroom in the house on another floor. My husband decided to run some blue coloured dye down the drainage hole in the base of the shower to see if the blue showed up on the ceiling - it hasn't. Then we tried running dye down the sink plug hole, overflow and now even the toilet in case it was that. Still after 4 days no blue dye has appeared on the ceiling. Please can someone advise where they think this leak might be coming from as I would love to start using the shower again!!
We did have a plumber come and look at the problem and he said that if we have run dye through the shower, sink and toilet and not seen anything it can't be coming from there and to isolate it he would need to take up the whole of the ensuite flooring tiles and maybe even cut a hole in the ceiling to see if MAYBE he could see a hair line leak causing the problem. Oh one more thing, we haven't had any recent dampning so do you think the leak may have just stopped on its own???!! :D

I doubt it - leaks don't normally cure themselves, it could be many things and not necessarily the wastes. It may be the water is getting between the shower tray the the walls, small gaps under tiles and shower tray etc.

You had this installed 3-4 months ago - and the damp patch is just starting to show, when it has probably been leaking all along - so the blue dye wont necessarily show up immediately.
