without using a dumpy or laser level what is the bestway to get posts level over a distance around 12m,and the best way to get a uniform descent/step in posts over 12m.i have 4x4 8ft posts for a 6ft close board fence so dont have alot to play with.any help much appreciated

If you are using base panels then line the first post up to take base and panel then cut a piece of scrap wood to the height of the panel, move onto second post fit base panel and sit wood on top to get correct height of post or get a long spirit level across tops of post.
Fit the string line along where fence is be be fitted, working alongside that line fit the first post at the highest point and work down (panel post panel post etc), give inch a half post protuding above panel with post cap fitted, you will find out as you continue fitting fence down the sloping ground, the steps in the fencing will find its own levels, try to keep steps uniform/equal as best you can. ps make sure you concrete the posts in.
