Hi diydodger123 I doubt that such a flimsy piece of wood can be of any use except perhaps as a temporary support during construction. There probably should be a proper strut at this point with a birds mouth at the top end. Fit a temporary strut and try removing the screws/nails and see how much the purlin drops - fit a new strut if needed after carpet fitting. Regards S
