Removing a brace in the loft to fit carpet?

Postby DIYDodger123 » Sun Sep 06, 2020 2:38 pm

This brace is attached to the side of a loft beam. It is directly above the centre of the bedroom below so don’t see how it can be doing much.
Does anyone know if I can cut this to put a carpet down??

Hi diydodger123
I doubt that such a flimsy piece of wood can be of any use except perhaps as a temporary support during construction. There probably should be a proper strut at this point with a birds mouth at the top end.
Fit a temporary strut and try removing the screws/nails and see how much the purlin drops - fit a new strut if needed after carpet fitting.

Thanks stoneyboy. Removed the brace and all looks fine. Think because we have installed flooring this has helped spread the weight
