Replacing heavy fireplace bricks below lintel

Postby Richtkd » Wed Nov 11, 2020 8:00 pm

Hi,

Had great advice from stoneyboy on this forum before, so back with one more topic.

While removing an old backburner from our fireplace we had to remove three heavy bricks from the chimney breast. (see pic below). There was no support underneath them, they were just mortared in place.

If we need to put these back as pictured, should we be cutting in a support to set them on? or would mortar alone be safe enough?

Many Thanks!

Hi richtkd
You definitely need to provide support, suggest you cut in a piece of angle iron 75x50mm or similar size (75mm is horizontal). Make sure you have at least a 75mm bearing at both ends.
