Simple Frame or Shelf for Bathroom to Protect Against Damp?

by mth » Sun Jun 11, 2017 2:34 pm

Hi all,

I have build a simple shelf from planed soft-wood. It is just a frame with mitre joins and a couple of boards in between. As decoration I intend to put a picture frame on top, similar to this:

The timber will get a treatment with oil based wood stain. Because the shelf is for the bathroom, I am worried about damp from the shower etc. The bathroom is well vented as we let damp out through the window, but of course the walls and furniture get wet a bit.

What would you advise for the frame and shelf unit itself? Do I need to seal the joints or will the wood be able to just breath and dry by itself?

Many thanks
