Soakaways

When my house was built the rainwater empties into a 'soakaway' under the lawn. I am now digging up the lawn so that I have some garden beds.

Does anyone know how deep under the surface the soakway is - will it matter if I make a bed above it

Well, it's going to be lower than the bottom of your downpipes. You'll soon know if it's shallow because you will find the top when you dig for the garden beds.
