Staining an old decking area

Postby JS2106 » Tue May 31, 2022 1:24 pm

Hi,

I have an old deck area that I want to stain. However, the decking has very worn, old paint on it. some areas of the decking have solid painted boars but most is worn.

I see online that you cannot stain decking with old paint on, my question is - Do I need to remove all paint so completely back to bare wood? or, as long as most of it had been sanded off, would that be ok? seems near on impossible to remove every bit of old paint, especially in the grooves of decking...

currently the colour its a faded brown/purple and I want to stain, Urban colour.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Jack.

Hi js2106,
You should be able to remove most of the old paint using a pressure washer, you will need what karcher calls a dirt blister nozzle but I’m sure there are alternative makes. A wire brush should deal with any stubborn bits.
