We bought a semi detached house and have extended to the side and also had a loft conversion done. The staircase to the loft complies to building regs but the original staircase that leads to the ground floor and the final exit is still an old ranch style as it was when we purchased the property. We are eventually going to have it redone with spindles to match the new staircase to the attic however funds don't allow this yet. Will it pass the final building inspection with the old ranch style as it is the existing staircase or will it need to comply with new building regs to pass? Hope this question makes sense, thanks in advance.
Hi crampy, Since your loft conversion is on the second floor you must provide a fire protected escape route. If there is not a means of escape to ground level directly from the loft you will have to fire protect the lower stairs and any corridors. It would be worth checking this with your local buildings regs department. Regards S
