stone effect tiles Advice and information on tiling and fixing tiles to a variety of surfaces

Help I have bought pale coloured stone effect tiles for the kitchen are theses suitable for use behind the cooker I'm thinking fat and gravy splashes can they be washed like the shiney glazed tiles.Also can I tile on top of painted tiles :?: and could I tile on top of vynile floor tiles.
