my daughters house (built in the 50s i think) has some styrange bracing in the loft the rafters sit on a purlin then there are what look like purlin posts but they dont actually touch the purlin initially i thought it was a retorfit to stop the rooff sagging or something but the timber looks similar age to the rest of the loft timbers the diagonal braces as positioned so the meet over the wall between the bedrooms hence the different angles and there is another purlin running over the bottom of these braces, you can see the pipes sitting on top of this
Hi daddum61, The vertical (or near vertical) struts were probably fitted during construction to locate the purlin between them and the diagonal braces. Left because the builder couldn’t be bothered to remove them. Regards S
