I watched a documentary about straw bale construction recently and I must say I was quite impressed. I'm wondering is it possible to use straw bales for insulation and what are the costs?
Straw is not a very good insulation.
It only works, if the bales are about two feet or more thick, and it is the air trapped inside and between the straw that provides the insulation.
Modern insulations like polystyrene, a closed cell insulation, provide a much better level of insulation per inch/foot of thickness whatever, they are also wind and rain proof and good for over fifty years.
